On my first trip to South Korea, I set off with full confidence, carrying a travel itinerary prepared based on Taiwanese travel guides. However, once I arrived at Incheon Airport and opened Google Maps, the blue marker appeared on the screen, but the actual route was nowhere to be found.
It was only later that I learned this to be a unique phenomenon in South Korea: due to local safety regulations, Google Maps are not allowed to transmit map data to servers overseas, resulting in the navigation functions for walking, driving, or taking buses becoming completely ineffective. The first time I encountered this issue, I spent a full twenty minutes circling around outside the Seoul Station.
In the past few years, I have traveled to South Korea almost ten times, and I have tried one app after another on my phone. Eventually, I realized that only a few of them were actually useful. However, these few apps can truly save you time, money, and trouble during your trip to South Korea, so it is definitely worth installing them and getting familiar with them before you set off.
I organized this article according to “functional categories.” From navigation to translation, from hailing a car to dining out, from exchanging money to booking medical beauty treatments—I have actually used each of these apps and will tell you what their strengths are, what potential pitfalls they have, and whether it’s worth downloading them.

I. Navigation Section: Google Maps can wait – these two tools are the real game-changers.
① Naver Map – The leader in the navigation industry in South Korea
Naver Map is by far the most frequently used map app in South Korea. It can do things that Google Maps simply cannot: provide accurate information such as “which bus door is the nearest,” “which passage should be taken for transfer,” and “what time is the best to board the bus.”
The interface supports full English mode, so you can use it smoothly even if you don’t understand Korean. Here’s a tip for you: if you see a restaurant you’re interested in on REDnote or Instagram, simply copy its Korean address and paste it into the search bar – this will locate the restaurant immediately, and the results will be much more accurate than using Chinese keywords.
In my opinion, the most practical feature is the ability to check the schedule of the last train for the subway. It’s quite common to stay out late in South Korea, so knowing in advance what time the last train leaves can help avoid a lot of inconvenience.
Download method: Search for “Naver Map” in the App Store or Google Play to use it for free.
② KakaoMap – the perfect companion for discovering delicious restaurants
The mapping function of KakaoMap is similar to that of Naver, but its greatest advantage lies in the fact that “the food reviews are more genuine”. Local South Koreans are accustomed to leaving reviews on KakaoMap, and these reviews are not artificially inflated, so the rate of negative reviews is much lower.
My usual approach is to use Naver Map for navigation and KakaoMap to find restaurants. I install both apps and use them in combination to minimize the chances of encountering problems.
In addition, KakaoMap is also deeply integrated with the Kakao T taxi app, which will be mentioned below – allowing users to hail a taxi directly on the map, ensuring a seamless experience.

II. Translation Section: Better Understanding of the Korean Context than Google Translate
③ Papago – The ultimate tool for menu translation
Papago is a translation app developed by Naver, and in terms of translating Korean text, it is significantly more accurate than Google Translate. Its main advantage lies in its “image translation” function: simply open the camera, point it at the menu, and tap the screen – the Korean text will be instantly translated into Chinese, with each character displayed in its original position, making the process both intuitive and convenient.
I was in South Korea for a week, and I used this function every day. Especially in those traditional Korean restaurants where there are no English menus, Papago was practically a “salvation” when it came to ordering food.
Other practical features:
- Voice translation: Real-time dialogue – it translates whatever you say immediately.
- Text translation: Supports offline mode (download the language package first).
- Camera translation: Instant recognition of any Korean text when it is brought into focus.
Caution: Papago may occasionally make mistakes in translating formal terms and colloquial expressions. In formal situations or during important communications, it is recommended to confirm the translations through written text rather than relying solely on voice recognition.
III. Travel: Say goodbye to hailing taxis on the roadside; using apps to book taxis is the way to go.
④ Kakao T – The Korean version of Uber, with transparent fees and no overcharging.
In South Korea, hailing a taxi on the street is more difficult than one might imagine, especially at night or in rainy weather. Kakao T is the most popular taxi-hailing app in South Korea, similar to Line Taxi in Taiwan. Users simply enter their starting and destination locations, and the system automatically calculates the fare before confirming the booking. This ensures transparent pricing and eliminates the risk of overcharging.
Currently, Kakao T supports the direct binding of certain overseas credit cards for payment, eliminating the need to carry cash. However, it is important to note that some functions (such as priority car-hailing services) still require verification using a South Korea mobile phone number. It is recommended to purchase a local SIM card or eSIM upon arriving in South Korea and then fully activate all available functions.
My personal experience: I stayed out until 1 a.m. at Hongdae, but there wasn’t a single empty taxi on the road. I used Kakao T to call a taxi, and it arrived within 3 minutes. The driver was also very professional; I didn’t need to speak Korean at all, as the GPS navigation took me straight to the hotel.
⑤ K.Ride – The most user-friendly taxi-hailing option for foreign tourists
If you don’t want to go through the hassle of obtaining a South Korea phone number, K.Ride is a better option for short-term visitors. It allows direct registration using overseas phone numbers and supports payment via Visa or Mastercard overseas credit cards. It also comes with an integrated real-time translation feature – you can send messages in English, and the driver will receive them in Korean.
The cost is slightly higher than that of regular taxis, but it eliminates the need for language barriers, making it especially recommended for friends who are visiting South Korea for the first time.

IV. Payment: The method of exchanging cash for services is no longer necessary.
⑥ WOWPASS — a combination of currency conversion and transportation card
I first saw this card at Incheon Airport. At that time, I had no idea what it was for, but later I realized that it was one of the first things you need to do when arriving in South Korea.
WOWPASS is a physical prepaid card that also incorporates T-money functionality (allowing direct use on subways and buses). It supports direct top-up in Korean won using foreign cash at automated machines at airports or in Myeongdong, accepting 16 different currencies. The exchange rates offered are generally more favorable than those at airport currency exchange counters.
Most importantly, you don’t need a South Korea bank account; you can exchange foreign currency in cash directly, which saves a lot of trouble for short-term visitors.
Scenarios of use: using the subway card, shopping at convenience stores, buying skincare products at Olive Young, or paying in cash at street stalls. Basically, with a WOWPASS, you don’t need to carry much cash during your entire trip.

V. Gourmet Section: If you don’t want to queue, use these two options.
⑦ CatchTable Global – The ultimate tool for booking popular restaurants
The problem of long queues at popular restaurants in South Korea is more serious than you might imagine. At popular places in areas like Myeongdong, Seongsu-dong, and Yeonnam-dong, waiting times can easily exceed an hour. CatchTable is designed to solve this issue.
CatchTable Global is a version designed for foreign tourists. Users can register simply by providing their email address, and they are also supported in using overseas credit cards to pay the deposit, allowing them to secure seats during peak periods in advance and avoiding the need to wait on-site.
Caution: The local version of CatchTable in South Korea requires a South Korean mobile phone number. Be sure to download “CatchTable Global” (the version with a fully English interface). These two apps look very similar, so don’t get them confused.
⑧ The “Nation of Delivery” – A must-have service for hotels ordering food delivery.
South Korea has a more developed takeout culture than Taiwan. When you’re hungry late at night, too lazy to go out, or want to have some fried chicken for a picnic by the Han River – this is when you need the “nation of takeout”.
Good news for 2026: This app has now launched global payment capabilities, supporting WeChat Pay, Alipay, as well as Visa and Mastercard. Foreign tourists no longer need to find ways to obtain a South Korea account.
Here’s a little trick: fill in the hotel address as the delivery location and the front desk number in the phone field. Write “Lobby pickup” in the remarks section. This way, the delivery will be sent directly to the lobby, and you don’t even need to leave your room.

VI. Medical Aesthetics: Going to South Korea for skin care – this app saves you both time and money.
When it comes to traveling to South Korea, more and more people no longer just go there to shop or visit attractions; they also take the opportunity to schedule some dermatology treatments or cosmetic procedures. South Korea boasts advanced skin care technologies, and the prices are more affordable compared to Taiwan, making these services a common part of many people’s travel itineraries.
But the problem is: How can one make an appointment if there is a language barrier? How can one determine whether a hospital is trustworthy? Are the prices transparent?
⑨ BeautsGO – A Chinese-based solution for booking medical beauty treatments in South Korea
This is the main tool I use to schedule appointments at Dermatology clinics in South Korea. BeautsGO is a platform dedicated to helping people schedule medical beauty treatments in South Korea. It aggregates information on over 1,000 legitimate Dermatology and plastic surgery clinics in South Korea, providing detailed Chinese-language descriptions of each clinic, price listings for various treatments, and genuine customer reviews – all of which are easy to understand.
What reassures me the most is the presence of Chinese-speaking customer service throughout the entire process: from choosing the treatment option, to receiving pre-treatment consultations, and all the way to confirming the appointment, you don’t need to speak a word of Korean, nor do you have to painstakingly search for contact information by yourself.
The treatments I booked through BeautsGO were hyaluronic acid injections, Pico treatments, and one ultrasonic knife session. Throughout the entire process, from checking prices on the app in advance to the doctor’s consultation and the actual treatment at the clinic, there were no communication barriers at all.
BeautsGO meets the following requirements:
- I want to receive skin care treatments in South Korea, but I don’t speak Korean.
- I’m not sure which hospital is safe and reliable to go to.
- It’s best to determine the specific services and prices before you set off, so as to avoid additional charges upon arrival.
- You would like the Chinese customer service to follow up on the entire process.
Platform support channels: WeChat Mini Programs, LINE, and Email. The reservation process is flexible and is not limited to any one particular channel.

VII. Three things that must be done before setting off
After discussing so many apps, let me summarize the key points for preparation before you set off in just three sentences:
① Download and install the application in advance within a WiFi network in China.
Some apps require registration and verification, and in situations such as on an airplane or at an airport, network issues can easily cause problems. It is recommended to download all these apps the night before your departure and log in to your accounts to test them out.
Essential checklist (to be completed before departure):
- 🗺️ Naver Map (navigation)
- 🗺️ KakaoMap (Gourmet Search)
- 🔤 Papago
- 🚕 Kakao T or K.Ride (for car-hailing services)
- 💳 WOWPASS APP (to be used in conjunction with the physical card)
- 🍽️ CatchTable Global (Restaurant Reservations)
- 💆 BeautsGO (Essential for those in need of medical beauty treatments)
② Immediately perform these two actions upon arriving at Incheon Airport
1. At the airport, you can use the WOWPASS self-service kiosk to exchange currency and obtain cards. These kiosks are usually located in prominent areas of the arrival hall. Exchanging cash in foreign currency directly at these kiosks is much faster than going through the regular exchange counters.
II. Purchase a local SIM card or eSIM from South Korea for activation – Many car-hailing apps require a South Korean phone number to function fully, so the sooner you activate it, the sooner you can start enjoying its benefits. SIM cards are available at various telecommunications counters in the airport, or you can purchase an eSIM online through Taiwan’s official website and activate it by scanning the QR code.
③ If you have plans to undergo medical beauty treatments, please make a reservation on BeautsGO one week in advance.
The popularity of appointments at popular Dermatology clinics in South Korea is much higher than you might imagine, especially during the peak tourist seasons (spring and autumn). If you plan to undergo major treatments such as ultrasonic knife procedures or Thermage, it is recommended that you book your appointment at BeautsGO at least 3 to 7 days in advance. Trying to find a clinic last-minute after arriving in South Korea will likely result in you not being able to get the appointment you desire.
VIII. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Is it really impossible to use Google Maps when going to South Korea?
It’s not completely unusable; the search function and static map features of Google Maps work just fine. However, the walking navigation feature (where the blue arrow guides you along the way) cannot be used due to South Korean regulations. If you are directionally impaired or need precise walking guidance, you must use Naver Map.
Q2: Is it convenient to use a Taiwanese credit card in South Korea?
In South Korea, most stores (including supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, and large shopping malls) accept Visa/Mastercard for overseas transactions, which is very convenient. It should be noted, however, that some vendors in traditional markets or those setting up stalls along side streets only accept cash; it is advisable to bring about 20,000 to 30,000 South Korean won as extra. For T-money (the subway and bus card system), you can use the WOWPASS service, so there is no need to carry much cash with you.
Q3: Is the Chinese-language service of BeautsGO truly available throughout the entire process?
Yes, BeautsGO provides Chinese-language customer service via WeChat, LINE, and Email. From the initial consultation about the treatment options, to the confirmation before the procedure, and to the follow-up after the treatment, all communications can be conducted in Chinese. Even if the medical staff at the clinic do not speak Chinese, the platform will assist with translation services, so you don’t have to worry about language barriers.
Q4: What is the difference between Kakao T and K.Ride? Which one should I use?
Kakao T is the most popular car-hailing app in South Korea, with the largest number of users and fast waiting times for cars. However, some advanced features require a South Korean mobile phone number to access. K.Ride, on the other hand, is specifically designed for foreign tourists – it can be used with any overseas phone number and comes with built-in translation functions, making it ideal for beginners who have no knowledge of the local language. It is recommended to install both apps and use them in combination depending on your specific needs.
Q5: Can these apps be used on the iPhone?
Certainly. All of the above apps are available in the iOS App Store. In South Korea, iPhone users dominate the MZ generation, and the iOS versions of these apps have been highly optimized, providing a user experience comparable to that of the Android versions.
Conclusion
When traveling to South Korea, using the right tools can help you avoid a lot of unnecessary troubles and worries. Use Naver Map for navigation, Papago for translation, Kakao T for hailing a car, WOWPASS for currency exchange, CatchTable for dining, and BeautsGO for medical beauty appointments – this combination of tools has become my standard setup whenever I go to South Korea.
If you plan to go to South Korea for skin treatment, it is highly recommended that you search for hospitals and treatment options on BeautsGO in advance, determine your budget carefully, and arrange everything before you depart. Once you are in South Korea, you can simply focus on getting better-looking.
Wish you a wonderful time during your trip to South Korea and a safe and happy return home. ✈️
