Why did I notice GOWA Gaoya

To be honest, there are so many Dermatology clinics in the Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon areas that it’s hard to choose. But what really caught my attention this time was GOWA GaoYa—because a friend told me, “The director there won’t keep pushing you to try this or that; after the consultation, they’ll just suggest the treatment that you truly need.”

When seeking cosmetic treatments in South Korea, the biggest fear is ending up trapped in a sales scheme once you’re there—initially intending to have just one procedure, only to be persuaded into having four or five instead. GOWA Gaoya gives me exactly the opposite impression: it’s a high-end, appointment-based Dermatology clinic that focuses on “doing less.”

From the subway exit to the clinic: How to get there in practice

I exited at Exit 9 of Sinnonhyeon Station, and right in front of me was the Duo Sinnonhyeon Building. There’s a very recognizable Twosome Place coffee shop on the first floor—GOWA is located on the 12th floor of this same building. Just take the elevator up, turn left, and you’ll find the reception desk. You won’t even need to use a navigation app the whole way.

This location is extremely convenient for first-time visitors to Korea:

  • Incheon Airport → Take Line 9 Express to Sinnonhyeon Station in about 45 minutes (no transfer needed)
  • Incheon Airport → Take the airport bus heading toward Gangnam and get off near the ANEW Sinnonhyeon station
  • It’s just a 2-stop subway ride from Libhib Dermatology (Gangnam Station).
  • The building features a parking tower, making it convenient for those driving their own cars.

What kind of person is Director Kang Hyun-uk?

This is what I think makes GOWA truly stand out—the director himself is the clinic’s core competitive advantage.

Dr. Kang Hyun-uk graduated from the School of Medicine at Inje University and completed his full residency training at Haeundae Paik Hospital and Sangxi Paik Hospital. During that time, he handled numerous cases related to facial injuries, inflammations, and reconstructive procedures, which gave him a deeper understanding of what constitutes a “safety threshold” compared to other doctors when he later worked in the field of cosmetic Dermatology.

After that, he served as Medical Director at several well-known clinics in Gangnam. Around 2021, he launched his own clinic called GOWA GaoYa. His approach is completely different from that of many conventional Dermatology practices.

  • The in-person consultation takes longer than elsewhere: he will examine your zygomatic arch, mandibular edge, and the area where the Hairline Correction meets the scalp by hand, and use your facial expressions to determine which areas should not be moved.
  • No emphasis on dramatic before-and-after contrasts: While other places like to apply four or five different treatments to a single face, he prefers to “cut back” — if he detects compensatory muscle tension causing sagging, sometimes just localized relaxation plus a modest amount of tightening energy is sufficient.
  • Pain management is part of the standard procedure: numbing cream, cold air blower, and a full set of cooling repair masks — they might even give you a stress ball to squeeze.
  • No forced sales: After the in-person consultation, we’ll only recommend the solutions that are most suitable for you—nothing extra is suggested.

8 key things to keep in mind before your appointment – check this out first

Focus Point 1|Closed every Wednesday—make sure not to miss it!

This is something that must be mentioned first. GOWA is closed all day every Wednesday—not just in the afternoon, but completely shut down. I recommend checking with BeautsGO the day before you go to confirm whether services will be available as usual, as the director might occasionally make last-minute changes due to academic engagements abroad.

Focus Point 2|Make sure to book in advance; walk-ins are not accepted.

GOWA operates on a fully reservation-based system, accepting only one group of guests at a time. During peak seasons (summer vacation, end of year, South Korea’s long holidays), it’s recommended to make reservations at least 7 days in advance. You can book online through the BeautsGO APP or mini-program, or consult via WeChat. Upon arrival, simply mention your name and phone number at the front desk.

Focus Point 3|People who are afraid of pain are actually perfect for this place

I’m not just saying nice things about them—A real customer review on BeautsGO reads, “I’m usually extremely sensitive to pain, but I was able to tolerate the Pico treatment for spot removal at Elegant Beauty. The doctor first tested the treatment on me a few times to adjust the energy level, and even gave me a stress ball to hold, which was really thoughtful of them.” There was only a thin layer of scab during the recovery period, with no darkening of the skin. If you’re also someone who fears pain, you can rest assured with this option.

Focus Point 4|The in-person consultation takes longer than you think, but it’s worth waiting for

Dr. Kang Hyun-wook doesn’t rush through the in-person consultation. He will examine the thickness of your facial bones and soft tissues by hand, observe your facial expressions, and then tell you whether “this area can be treated” or “it’s better to leave that area alone for now.” The entire process may take 30–40 minutes. But it is precisely this thorough approach that ensures natural-looking results in the end.

Focus Point 5|Same price as in Korea and China, easy payment options

GOWA clearly states that prices are the same for both Koreans and foreigners, with no extra charges imposed just because you’re from out of town. Payment options include South Korean won in cash, WeChat, Alipay, and UnionPay cards—making it very convenient for Chinese tourists. A written quote will be provided during the consultation, with no hidden fees.

Focus Point 6|No general anesthesia, but intravenous sedation is available

GOWA does not offer general anesthesia (after all, it’s a Dermatology clinic). However, if you’re worried about pain or undergoing more extensive treatments such as full-face HIFU, you can opt for intravenous sedation (which is an additional charge of around ₩50,000–100,000). Most people can complete their treatment with the help of numbing agents combined with cold air therapy.

Focus Point 7|What Does Post-Procedure Care Include?

After the procedure, the clinic provides basic post-operative care guidance and instructions on using cold compresses. For treatments involving injections or lasers, it’s recommended to avoid makeup, excessive sun exposure, and strenuous exercise on the day of the treatment. GOWA does an excellent job following up after procedures—they send a text message the next day to check on recovery progress. If further repair treatments are needed, they can be scheduled at the same time as your initial appointment.

Focus Point 8|Who Is Best Suited for GOWA? Who Might Want to Take Another Look

Ideal for: those who seek natural subtle enhancements rather than a complete facial transformation, individuals who are sensitive to pain and need thorough pain management, people who dislike aggressive sales tactics, working professionals (with evening appointments available until 20:00), and those who have time on Sundays to get treatments (GOWA is also open on Sundays until 17:00).

Those who might want to take another look: people seeking extremely noticeable results (GOWA’s philosophy is “subtle yet refined”), those who want to keep their budget as low as possible (there are even cheaper options in Gangnam, such as Libhib HIFU starting at 990,000 won), and those hoping for package discounts on multiple treatments (GOWA does not offer combo deals).

For the same Seoul trip, I also visited the following clinics in person. Each has its own unique style and strengths, so you can compare them based on your own needs.

Hospital Location / Strengths Highlights of My In-Depth Visit
Libhib Dermatology 1 minute from Exit 10, Gangnam Station | Female Director’s Private Consultations Doctoral Dean at Yuhwa Women’s University; HIFU treatments starting at 990,000 won – same price in South Korea and China

Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

💬 Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
How to make an appointment at GOWA Dermatology
You can make an online reservation by searching for “GOWA Gaoya” through the BeautsGO APP or WeChat Mini Program, or consult via the hospital’s official WeChat account. It’s recommended to book at least 3–7 days in advance, and even earlier during peak seasons.
How does GOWA compare to other Dermatology clinics in Gangnam?
What sets GOWA apart is its “gentle refinement + pain management” approach. If you’re looking for dramatic results, Pêche’s night services and year-round availability might be more suitable; whereas if cost-effectiveness is a priority, Libhib’s HIFU treatment starting at 990,000 won offers one of the lowest prices in Gangnam.
What do you need to prepare for your first visit?
Bring your passport (for registration), go with your natural skin or lightly made-up face (a face consultation requires seeing the actual condition of your skin). If you are taking any medications or have a history of allergies, please inform the front desk in advance. Fasting is not required.
Can you go shopping right after the procedure?
Let’s take a look at the different treatments. After undergoing hyaluronic acid injections/Pico/treatment for skin care, you can leave right after taking a short rest. For Thermage/HIFU, it’s recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure on the day of the treatment, but going out for normal shopping or dining is perfectly fine.
Does GOWA offer Chinese-language services?
Yes. The clinic offers Chinese-language consultations and translation services, and payments can be made via WeChat and Alipay. Director Jiang Xuanxu primarily communicates in Korean, but he is assisted throughout by a Chinese-speaking assistant.
Which option offers the best value for money
According to customer feedback, Pico laser spot removal and hyaluronic acid injection treatments are GOWA’s most popular services for repeat bookings. If you’re looking for an anti-aging package, the combination of ONDA and Thermage is 15–20% cheaper than opting for either treatment alone, while also delivering more comprehensive results.
